A suburban area is a cluster of properties, primarily residential, that are not densely compacted, yet located very near an urban area that is.
Suburbs are not urban, but still do not have any of the defining characteristics of a rural area like agriculture or open space. Suburban areas are portrayed in popular culture as familial and slow paced.
Who lives in suburban areas?
Suburban areas are commonly associated with families, and not single people or young couples. However, this common association is really a misconception.
As housing prices in urban areas skyrocket, younger folks are becoming unwilling or unable to pay rent. As a result, they're moving out of the city and into more suburban areas.
Characteristics defining a suburban area
It can be difficult to distinguish what is a suburban area vs. an urban area or rural area. In fact, depending on which definition of each you choose to ascribe to, the lines can be fairly blurred.
That being said, there are some characteristic that define a suburban area.
- Lacking a significant amount of open space or agricultural zoning
- Primarily residential, though there are some essential commercial properties present
- More affordable housing than in nearby city centers
- Located within a reasonable commute of an urban area
What does a suburban rental look like?
The average suburban rental varies quite a lot from the average urban apartment. Urban apartments are characteristically small, expensive and, in some instances, inconvenient.
Conversely, suburban rentals are going to be larger and generally easier to live in — think "more bang for your buck." Suburban rentals may even be partially or fully detached.
