How to Host an Olympic Opening Ceremony Party

If you’re reading this, the chances are high that you didn’t save up the cash for that plane ticket to Rio to see the 2016 Summer Olympics in person. However, just because you’re not currently enjoying a beach-side samba lesson doesn’t mean you can’t bring the delights of Rio into your apartment. With the following tips and tricks, you can turn your apartment into the perfect place to watch the ceremony — complete with food, drinks and fun.

The Drinks:

When it comes to cocktails, the Brazilians know what they’re doing. For example, take their national drink: the Caipirinha. This ultra-refreshing beverage uses cachaca, a sugarcane-based hard liquor that also happens to be the most common alcohol served in Brazil. While cachaca is relatively easy to find at most liquor stores, you can also substitute rum.

Need a non-alcholoic option? Try serving chilled coconut water. Vendors on the beach in Rio often sell the water straight from the coconut, but you can probably get away with buying a carton.

The Food:

If there’s one things the Brazilians are good at, it’s partying until the small hours. To be able to do this, one needs a meal that can prepare the stomach for copious amounts of alcohol and dancing. Often considered the national dish of Brazil, feijoada is a rich stew of black beans and pork (think sausage, bacon and other cuts). It absolutely fits the bill for an Olympic party, as it can easily be served and kept warm in a crock pot.

Brazilians also adore a barbecue, or churrasco, and they know how to do it well. Get your apartment’s community grill going, or your own if your lease allows it and start firing up beef, pork sausages or even chicken hearts (a favorite of Rio). Serve with salad on the side, or ask your guests to all bring a side dish to go along with it. You’ll also need one of the country’s favorite grilling condiments: chimichurri sauce.

What Time Does the Olympic Opening Ceremony Start?

In the United States, NBC is hosting most of the Olympic action, with the opening ceremony starting at 7:30pm ET on Friday, August 5th 2016. You can keep up with all the action on their official website for the games.

The summer Olympics only come around once every 4 years, so getting your friends and family together in front of the TV is a great way to celebrate. International friends around? Get your guests to dress in gear from their home country, or encourage everyone to go red, white and blue to support Team USA. By turning your apartment into a “mini Rio,” you’re sure to have a great time.
