Back To School: The Essential Checklist for Parents

Back to School Checklist
With summer drawing to a close, it’s time to get both you and your kids thinking about heading back to school. Getting ready for the upcoming school year can be hectic, which means getting yourself organized is essential. Let Apartment Guide come to the rescue with our handy countdown-style checklist to help get you started!

4 Weeks Before School Starts

  • New Student? Find Out the School. While your apartment’s community manager will probably be able to assist you with school information, you can also easily find out which school catchment areas you’re in by visiting Greatschools.org.
  • Get Registered. Give your child’s school a quick call to ensure that your child is still registered with them and isn’t missing any essential forms for activities or sports, or required immunizations. This step is particularly important if your child is going to a new school this fall.
  • Visit the School’s Website. If you’ve got questions such as supply lists and dress codes, you’ll likely find it there.
  • Get a Checkup. Why interrupt the first few weeks of classes with a doctor or dentist appointment? Best to get it out of the way beforehand.
  • Check the Homework. Some schools assign books to read or assignments over the summer holidays. Make sure your kid is on track to complete them before the start of the school year.

3 Weeks Before School Starts

  • Arrange Your Calendar. Find out important school dates, play dates and vacation times and get them transferred onto your main calendar.
  • Figure Out Transportation. Is your child taking the bus? Carpooling? Are you driving? Speak to your apartment community manager for what the local bus stops are.
  • Start Getting Your School Supplies. Make a checklist of what you need and start gathering it up. Keep an eye out for sales.
  • Check Your Childcare. Will your kid be heading to an afterschool program, or is there a care situation in place? Double check details to make sure everything is ready.
  • Schedule a Haircut. Those school pictures come up quicker than you think!

2 Weeks Before School Starts

  • Start Bedtime Routines. Chances are the summer had your kids staying up late or sleeping in. Get the sleep schedule back on track for the school year.
  • Visit the School. Take a look around and get to know your child’s classroom and school layout. If you’re the parent of a younger child, taking them along for a walkthrough can help alleviate any stress or anxiety.
  • Tidy Up. Has your kid’s room turned into a summertime dump? Clear the clutter and start the school year fresh.
  • Create a Study Space. Have a regular space for study time. If your home space allows for it, try to give each child their own space with access to school supplies and adequate lighting.
  • Practice & Review. It’s easy to forget those multiplication tables or how to diagram a sentence during the summer. Review last year’s work to get them up to speed.

1 Week Before School Starts

  • Plan Meals and Snacks. Create a list of breakfasts, packed lunches and quick dinners to make the back to school transition easy for both you and the kids.
  • Get the Backpack Ready. Help your child pack the essentials for their first day, including school supplies.
  • Routine, Routine, Routine. Continue the routine trend by starting regular meal and homework times the week before. Your child can review last year or even read to help get them in the habit.
  • Do a Dry Run. Try taking the route to school with your kid so they feel confident on how they get to school and where to go once they get there.
  • Discuss the New School Year. No matter what your child’s age, everyone gets excited or anxious about the first day of school. Take the time to listen and encourage them.

It may seem like a lot to take in, but if you split the tasks up by week it’s easy to get the family ready to go back to school. Have we missed anything? Are there any tips you can share? Get in touch with us on our social channels!
