Cincinnati Neighborhoods: A Guide

Though Cincinnati, Ohio, is not often thought of as a thriving urban metropolis, it’s actually one of the country’s coolest cities. For one thing, there’s a lot to do (including tons of food and local beer options– what more could you want?). For another, it’s drastically cheaper than many other cities in the U.S.

Plus, whether you’re enjoying the cool architecture downtown, the picturesque hills, the winding Ohio River, or the charming streets that run throughout Cincinnati neighborhoods, it’s actually a very beautiful city.

And speaking of Cincinnati neighborhoods, there are a ton of really great ones. If you’re moving to the Ohio city (or just visiting), here’s a guide to some of the most popular areas in the metropolis:

Downtown

Downtown Cincinnati has developed from a relatively seedy neighborhood to one that’s packed with residences, restaurants, bars, attractions, and various other things to do. Like other city centers, this area of Cincinnati is considered the hub of the business district, and the neighborhood also contains several museums, and a growing number of residential buildings, including everything from luxury condos to lofts.

If you’re in the area, head to the local favorite The Presidents Room for a more high-end meal, or to Horse and Barrel or Incline Public House for a bit more of a casual drinking or dining experience.

Mount Adams

Located along the Ohio River right next to Downtown, Mount Adams is one of the best and most central Cincinnati neighborhoods without being directly downtown. Its location is perhaps the best part about Mount Adams– it’s next to the river, surrounded by hills and sits among many of Cincinnati’s parks, making it perfect for outdoorsy folks.

But that’s not the only great part about the neighborhood. It also contains tons of trendy shops, bars, and restaurants, most of which are a relatively easy walk from anywhere in the neighborhood. The area is home to families, singles, young professionals, and more.

Northside

​Northside– a favorite neighborhood of many Cincinnati residents– is a mecca of locally owned stores, restaurants, cafes, and bars. The area is known for being hip, liberal, and LGBTQ-friendly, which makes it a very chill neighborhood with tons to do. During the warmer months, don’t miss the neighborhood’s local farmers markets and arts festivals (including the Northside Second Saturday).

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with trendy “craft” foods, music venues, and a diverse and welcoming population, Northside is absolutely the right place for you.

Over-the-Rhine

Like Northside, Over-the-Rhine is often called “hip,” and that couldn’t be more true. Though it used to be considered one of the most dangerous Cincinnati neighborhoods, OTR has undergone a massive redevelopment and is now a fun and youthful area with a lot to offer.

If you walk through OTR, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an array of cafes, boutiques, and eateries, along with many places that will serve you amazing beer– the neighborhood is widely considered the top brewery district of the city.

Walnut Hills

If you’re talking about up-and-coming Cincinnati neighborhoods, Walnut Hills (and its neighbor, East Walnut Hills) should be first on the list. Like OTR, Walnut Hills has developed from seedy to trendy, and is becoming increasingly more hip and exciting.

Just a few minutes away from the University of Cincinnati, this neighborhood has all the diversity you would expect from a college area, which means you’ll find an eclectic range of foods and a variety of things to do.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is a beautiful neighborhood in Cincinnati, once thought of as a hub for the city’s more wealthy residents. The neighborhood, which is largely residential but very close to Downtown, is now home to everyone from wealthy people to young professionals just making their way.

The unarguable hub of the neighborhood is Hyde Park Square, which is a central plaza (complete with a picturesque fountain) surrounded by shops and restaurants.

Clifton

Clifton’s pretty spot on a hillside is just one of the things that makes it a really cool place to live and hang out. The neighborhood, which is home to the University of Cincinnati, has an interesting history, and a lot of fun attractions, shops, restaurants, and bars.

In the area? Stop by the historic Esquire Theater to check out an independent flick, or wander the Gaslight District to browse the shops and eateries at your leisure.

Oakley

Oakley is on the rise as a neighborhood for young professionals to get their start. Between its affordable rent, thriving business district, ample shopping, and cool and diverse locals, you’ll never want to leave.

Head to Oakley Square or Hyde Park Plaza to do some shopping. And, if you’re lucky enough to be in the area on the second Friday of the month any time between May and October, don’t miss Oakley After Hours, where you’ll find art, food, music, and more.
