As a homeschooling family who raised five children, we have had many teachable moments throughout those years. One of the kids’ earliest chores was taking care of the family pets. Refilling food and water, cleaning the cat box and taking care of messes in the house were all part of everyone’s “favorite” chore. No, it really wasn’t preferred, but it sure filtered out the true animal lovers in the bunch!
If our kids wanted a pet of their own, we required them to research its price, habitat, upkeep and cost, then write a report and give a presentation. This usually revealed who wasn’t up to the task of pet ownership! I think this might be a good test for adults as well and save others from making an impetuous decision about pet ownership.
How do you know if a pet is right for you and your family? Owning a pet can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, as well as improve your social life. However, here are some things to consider before rushing out and claiming that adorable puppy or kitten.
#1. What are the rules for your apartment community? Is a pet deposit required in case of damages? Make sure you have the management company’s rules in writing before you decide if owning a pet is right for you.
#2. Are pets allowed in common areas or in elevators, balconies or patios? Check out the closest area for taking a dog out for a potty trip if a dog is your pet of choice. Consider all the stairs and access to a natural area.
#3.What kind of pet should you get? Does anyone have allergies? Do you have a good amount of space or only a small area to keep the pet in? Choose one that is well suited and easily adapts to a confined space. Do you need a crate or a cage? If a dog or cat is not an option, what about a guinea pig, hamster, turtle or fish?
#4. Will the noise or smell infringe on other residents’ living spaces? Will your neighbors complain to management about the barking or odor? Make sure you do your homework if you’re interested in a pet type you’ve never owned before.
#5. Is your apartment a good environment for your pet? Do you have plenty of room and the time to devote to a positive pet relationship?
Here’s more food for thought, and good luck as you make this important decision!
