Before and After: An Unloved A-Frame Turned Retro-Inspired Retreat — House Tour

Name: Christina, husband Kele Dobrinski, and three kids
Location: Serene Lakes atop Donner Summit, California. About 10 miles from Truckee and just two miles from Donner Lake.
Size: 2,800 square feet
Years lived in: 1 years, owned

Our family is full of adventure seekers who love skiing, hiking and kayaking, so discovering an unloved A-frame cabin tucked away in the off-the-beaten path community of Serene Lakes had a ton of appeal to us. The surrounding woods are uncrowded and perfect for exploring, and the two lakes that sit in the center of the community are the quintessential throwback to Americana recreation.

6 Stylish Ways to Display Your Books If You've Run Out of Shelf Space

If you like design, there's a good chance you also like books—especially ones about interiors and art, which tend to be big. No matter the subject, books bring so much joy to a home—whether it's by providing entertainment, education, or escape. And on a more superficial level, they add color and texture to a space to make it more visually rich and interesting too. So yeah, you're probably going to have more than a few bookcases full of books, especially if you've been collecting since you were young. But what do you do when you run out of room? You pretty much get to stacking. These creative display ideas should give you some inspiration if you're running low on shelf space.

The 6 Food Choices That Saved Us When My Husband Lost His Job

When my husband came home from work and told me that the next day would be his last at his job, we went into immediate emergency cost-cutting mode. And we quickly learned that the easiest place to slash the budget, in principle, was one of the most painful in practice: our food expenses. We love food—eating it, cooking it, talking about it, sharing it. And an embarrassingly large percentage of our budget went to food—good ingredients, kitchen equipment, eating out.

But there was no choice, so red-alert budget went into effect for the almost six months that we lived on one freelance income, one unemployment check, and rapidly dwindling savings. Here are the choices we made that kept us from overdrawing the bank account during that time.

A Designer's Australian Home Is an Explosion of Pink, Plants, and Quirky Decor — House Tour

Name: Lara Ivachev, Adrian, and two dogs Otis and Kiku
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Years lived in: 1.5 years

When Lara and Adrian were ready to escape city life a year and a half ago, they headed about 45 minutes away from Melbourne's central business district to some outer suburbs. Not quite the countryside (though down an ungraded road), many of the homes in this area are on large properties, with houses hidden behind tall gum trees. Together, the couple created a quirky, colorful, and happy home—and the perfect creative space for Lara and her label, Eat Me Do.

Prediction: This Feature Will Soon Be in Every Kitchen in America

If you asked me what bothers me most about my kitchen, I'd answer, hands-down, my kitchen sink. It's an old brown ceramic sink with a faucet that, until very recently, sprayed you square in the face every time you turned it on. Lovely, right?!

Thankfully, a kitchen reno is on the horizon, and chances are our sink is about to get a major upgrade. According to a recent report by Houzz, more than half (57 percent!) of upgraded kitchen faucets are now high-tech.

The Best Affordable City for Your Zodiac Sign

How does moving to a brand new city sound? For some zodiac sun signs, like Cancers, it might sound terrible, as they're prone to staying close to their family and are nostalgic for the "old neighborhood." (Though, it might be a great experience for them to get out of their shells a bit!)

"They are the homebodies of the zodiac," explains Jenna Smith of My Stars! Horoscopes. "Once they get nestled into a place, they don't want to leave."

But for others—like a Sagittarius, who is always itching for something new—picking up and moving can be exciting, and a good strategy, especially if you're looking to save money.

"They are the adventurers of the zodiac and crave new experiences," Smith says. "A really big draw for them will be how much a new city will expand their minds."

So, if you've noticed your horoscope has been nudging you to embrace change or to get your finances in order, here are some affordable cities throughout the United States that could be your next hometown. Because cities have personalities, too, we've played matchmaker and linked them with their corresponding sun signs:

This Smart Luggage Will Even Help You Pack

Trying to fit all of your necessities into a single carry-on has to be one of the quickest ways to induce a travel-related meltdown. Personally, I prefer to reserve that emotional and mental energy for the inevitably aggravating TSA line or for giving a penetrating glare to the impatient passengers who think they should be allowed to de-plane before everyone else. If a stressed-out packer makes for a stressed-out traveler, this new luggage brand could be the helping hand you need.

Before and After: This Kitchen Flips the Script on Beige and Boring

Ida recently stumbled across images she took the day she closed on her condo. Apart from the fantastic light, which is one of the reasons she and her husband were sold on the place, the kitchen was pretty basic and humdrum. It's come a very long way in the three years since this photo was taken.

7 Ways to Add Warmth to a Mostly Minimalist Space

What is it about minimalism that always makes us a little weak in the knees? It doesn't matter if it's one of Philip Johnson's iconic glass houses or a set from our favorite movie, there's something about those clean lines, pared-down details and neutral color palette that makes us feel like we're in a stylish sanctuary.

But while there's no doubt minimalism oozes luxury, the lack of colors, prints, and quirkiness can make the covetable style feel a little, well, lifeless.

Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that way. Your home is a reflection of yourself and, regardless of the style, it should feel warm and welcoming to you and your guests.

If warming up a minimalist space feels like Mission: Impossible, relax—we asked a few design experts how to do so like a pro.

Nearly Every Color Is Represented in This Cozy Delaware Home — House Call

Name: Kirsten Olson, partner, college-aged child, pets galore!
Location: Bellefonte — Wilmington, Delaware
Size: 2,000 square feet
Years lived in: 13 years, owned

Our family—my husband, college-aged child, and me—have lived in this house for 13 years, along with a constantly changing array of pets. (Right now it's two dogs and four cats.) The house was built in 1910 and still retains much of its early 20th-century bungalow charm, like the beautiful unpainted wood trim and some of the original (drafty) windows. But it's been improved upon over the years, with a wonderful bright, airy family room addition, and incredibly spacious closets built under the eaves. (We moved here from a city row house and I almost fainted when I saw the closets for the first time.)

3 Things at Home You Need to "Hand Mop"

As much as we love the cleaning tools and hacks that promise to make cleaning as quick and painless as possible, there's no real substitute for our own eyes and hands. Getting down on hands and knees and mopping the old-fashioned, bucket-and-rag way results in a detailed kind of clean that no other method provides and that, every once in a while, is so worth it.
