A roommate is one of two or more persons sharing the same room or living quarters.
A roommate can often be the difference between being able to afford a spiffy apartment or a below-average studio. Oftentimes, an individual chooses to seek out a roommate (or multiple roommates) so that rent is cheaper. Other times, some people just don't like the idea of living alone. Whether it's a close friend or a total stranger, having a roommate has its benefits.
Should I have a roommate?
It all depends on two things: Personality and financial limitations.
First and foremost, if you enjoy the idea of living with someone and the camaraderie of that sort of arrangement, then go for it. Many people love sharing an apartment with someone — it's not so lonely.
And as to finances, it's usually cheaper to have a roommate. You're splitting all of your bills in half, which takes away a lot of financial pressure. That might allow you to save some money or just simply feel less stressed about being able to pay your bills and live your daily life.
Pros of having a roommate
- Save more money by splitting costs
- Social atmosphere of living with someone makes it less lonely
- Bigger space
Cons of having a roommate
- Not agreeing on things could cause uncomfortable arguments
- Finding out that you and your roommate are not compatible
- No alone time
Finding a roommate
There are a bunch of online websites that will tailor your specific needs to finding you the perfect roommate. There are even mobile apps to help you out. Otherwise, use word of mouth! Ask your friends and family if anyone they know is looking for a roommate.
