What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)?

A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) is an all-in-one living center. It's both an independent and assisted living center with the added benefits of a nursing home, depending on what you need at the time.

Why should I choose a CCRC?

If you want to stay in the same place for years to come, a continuing care retirement community will help you transition between later stages in life, without you needing to move. You'll be surrounded by others experiencing a similar stage of life and there's always someone there in case you need help of any kind.

But such care will cost you. And although meals are usually provided, there isn't as wide of a variety and you have little say in what meals are served each day.

The types of activities available can also be limited and there may only be a few opportunities for you to leave to go to the grocery store or a fun out-of-facility activity. You'd also be giving up some privacy as you're living in a community, so all meals and activities are open to whoever wants to participate.

Pros of a CCRC

  • Nurses and caregivers are always available
  • Shift the type of care you receive when necessary
  • Community of others in the same stage of life

Cons of a CCRC

  • Can be more expensive
  • Limited food menu and activities
  • Less privacy

Is a CCRC right for you?

Make sure you take all things into consideration before deciding if a continuing care retirement community is right for you. Think about the pros and cons and what you're looking for in a retirement community.
