What is Co-Living?

Co-living is a lot like living with roommates but it has some distinct differences. Co-living is sharing a house or similar building with a number of other people, usually, others who share something in common with you — perhaps people that work in the same industry as you, at the same company as you or even students who go to the same school as you.

The grouping of like individuals is what sets formal co-living apart from simply rooming with another individual. Additionally, co-living spaces may have more than one person per room, unlike most roommate situations.

Why would anyone want to co-live?

Co-living is beneficial for many professionals and students looking to cement their place in their industry or colleague circle. Co-living provides networking opportunities and a time for personal advancement even while in the home.

In addition to this, many proper co-living spaces offer a ton of amenities like maid service, live-in cooks or free wireless internet.

What are the benefits of co-living?

  • Shared living with like-minded individuals
  • Encourages ambition
  • Access to specialized amenities for your lifestyle
  • Often in a prime location for the residents who live there

Cons of co-living

  • Shared space with many people
  • Oftentimes more expensive than traditional renting
  • Can have more stipulations and rules than standard apartments
  • Hard to have friends or out of town guests visit

How do you even find a co-living opportunity?

Co-living spaces are primarily found in tech-centric communities or near college campuses. If you're looking for a co-living space in your area, a rental search website is the best place to start.
