What is an Accessible Apartment?

An accessible apartment is an apartment that's been built to accommodate those with disabilities. This makes it easier to move about in a wheelchair and have easy access to everything someone needs to live comfortably.

What should I expect to see in an accessible apartment?

You'll find everything that any other apartment has, but it will all be laid out in a different way. Here are a few common elements of an accessible apartment:

  • Wider hallways and door frames
  • More open spaces for moving about
  • Low-resistance flooring (i.e. hard floors or thin carpet)
  • Modified appliances
  • Lower countertops and cabinets
  • Lower light switches

Accessible apartment buildings also have elevators and an appropriate street entrance for wheelchairs to enter. All of these elements make it easier for someone in a wheelchair to move around and perform normal daily tasks without additional assistance from others.

What does an accessible apartment look like?

Accessible apartments generally look like regular apartments, but they have modified features or appliances, such as stove ranges with buttons and knobs at the front so they're easier to reach or handrails in the bathtub and shower.

These modifications make it safer and more convenient for those with disabilities to perform daily tasks, making apartment living more comfortable.
