Apartment dwelling is perfect for pet lovers who are thinking about adopting a rescue cat because they don't require a lot of space or a backyard to frolic in. It's much safer and healthier for your cat to enjoy catching rays on your terrace four floors up than living an inside/outside lifestyle.
Cats come in a variety of breeds and personalities and some may be better suited for apartment life than others. Felines are generally quirky and playful, so even if you have a small one-bedroom apartment, you can creatively catify it with a plush cat tree or kitty condo, a jute-scratching pad and soft toys filled with catnip.
Here are some cat breeds that will fit right in at your apartment.
People pleasers
Consider looking for a cat that will adapt easily to being around people, especially if you like to entertain, and also one that doesn't necessarily need to have a lot of space to be happy.
A Bengal, for instance, which is an average to large-sized, spotted cat breed with a wild ancestry, will likely need a lot of space to exercise and be super active vs. a Persian who is going to spend copious time lounging on her throne.
Funny felines
While a Tabby is not a breed, but the pattern of a cat's coat, the shorthaired tabby bears mentioning because the fur pattern can be found in lots of mixed-breed cats (even purebreds).
The personality, especially of the Blue Mackerel Tabby, with its silver, gray and black-ringed striping on the tail and legs and buttons on the belly, could be the goofy buddy for you. Weighing in at about 12-plus pounds, the tabby has a playful, silly and loving attitude and is fully committed to its owner.
This cat enjoys some lap time and snuggling under the covers, and is certain to follow you around with a zigzag between your legs. This kitty has an adorable squeaky meow for attention and when wanting to play with its favorite toys, like sticks with feathers to wave around.
Regal, sweet and gentle
The gorgeous Persian with its ever-so-sweet expression has a flat face and large round eyes, and weighs in at around 7-10 pounds. With a royal demeanor some might even call snobbish, the Persian's coat comes in many colors, including silver, golden, shaded or smoky.
Tending to be a mild-mannered and gentle soul, the Persian is not a highly demanding pet, but does adore companionship by curling up in your lap and playing with interactive toys. Being left alone for long periods of time might not make this beauty the best choice, unless you decide to adopt two Persians that can keep each other company. Grooming is a commitment since brushing is required for a breed that matts easily.
Maine Coons are sweet, fluffy, plus-size bundles of pure love that are friendly and get along with everyone. The Maine Coon is not very talkative in a cross conversation with you, but will express itself while sitting on the terrace for a chat with the birds. That's the hunter coming out! Regular weekly brushing is required for longhaired coats that vary in color from gray-brown tabby to solid to tortoiseshell.
With short fur that requires little maintenance, the velvety soft shimmering silver to dark gray slate coat is befitting the Russian Blue. A bit standoffish with people they don't know, this affectionate charmer becomes friends fast when given the opportunity to head-butt your guests. Face-butts are not out of the question, either! Loyal to its owner, you'll be bonded for life with a cat that enjoys treats and playtime as much as snuggles.
Purr-fect companions
The Ragdoll is as handsome as can be with intense blue eyes and a semi-long coat that's luxurious in cream, vanilla and chocolate brown tones. This is the epitome of a laid-back cat companion who is made for living indoors. And with a temperament that's nothing short of sweet, the Ragdoll isn't going to demand much from you except your love.
