Where to Get Rid of Your Post Holiday Clutter

The holidays are characterized by giving. It's a lovely time of year but it does force us to confront one negative side effect – clutter. You're going to get all sorts of new things during the holidays. If you're wondering how to declutter, you've arrived in the right place. We've rounded up the best places to get rid of your holiday clutter.

1. Donate to Goodwill

For many, Goodwill is the first place that comes to mind when they think of donating used items. Goodwill has been collecting items to sell to benefit those who are poor since 1902.

When you donate an item to Goodwill, the item will be sold either in-store or on one of their online auction sites. Goodwill accepts donations of clothing, household items, toys and more.

In addition to donating your clothes to a company that will help disadvantaged people find opportunity – you can even claim a charitable donation deduction on your taxes!

2. Sell unwanted clothes to a second-hand store

Many second-hand clothing stores will actually buy your unwanted clothes from you. If apparel is one of your primary sources of clutter, this could be perfect for you. Someone takes your clutter off your hands plus they pay you – a win-win!

Some popular stores that do this are Plato's Closet and Buffalo Exchange but you'll likely find other second-hand clothing stores that will do the same in your local area.

Keep in mind that many of these stores are notorious for offering you much less than you might expect – sometimes in the form of store credit. If you're not comfortable with this, consider some of our other options.

3. Sell excess clothing and accessories on Poshmark

Selling on Poshmark is a great option if you consider your clutter to be items with real value. Poshmark is a clothing and accessory marketplace app that works in a way similar to eBay.

Sellers post photos of their items to the app and buyers can browse the items by category. Items can be listed for a flat fee but buyers can also propose offers outside of the set listing price. Poshmark takes a $2.95 flat-rate commission on any sales under $15 and a 20 percent commission on any sale over $15 – the rest is yours to keep.

While many local second-hand stores will offer you very little for your items, on Poshmark, your audience is global and you aren't forced to sell for less than you'd like to. There are even reports of very lucrative businesses operating through Poshmark – maybe, you'll be the next holiday hoarder turned mogul.

4. Facebook Marketplace

If you have an existing Facebook account, you can use Facebook Marketplace to buy and sell almost anything. The platform allows you to set a price but also to negotiate with potential buyers via Facebook's "messenger."

Facebook Marketplace is a good choice for getting rid of clutter if your belongings don't fall into a specific enough niche like clothing or household items. But, keep in mind, with this particular option, you have to arrange for delivery or shipment with whoever buys from you – a hassle you may not want to go through.

5. Amazon Trade-In

Amazon has its own trade-in program where you sell your used items back to the company and they repay you with a pre-specified amount of Amazon store credit. At this time, you can trade in Kindle e-readers, tablets, streaming media players, Bluetooth speakers, Amazon Echo products, textbooks, cell phones and video games.

Not all products are accepted at this time, but Amazon reports that, 'the Trade-In program is constantly updated with new items." Amazon Trade-In might be the way to get rid of those gifts that, while thoughtful, weren't quite what you wanted, and replace them with something better.
