Phoenix doesn’t have a signature dish in the way that Philadelphia has cheesesteak and New York has cheesecake, pizza, and bagels. But if we had to narrow it down to just one food that you have to try when you’re in town, we’d suggest the almighty taco. Phoenix has so many taco shops that picking the absolute best would take us too long. But these shops are sure to hit the spot and represent what this great taco city has to offer. Whether it’s dirt cheap or a gourmet offering, here are some great spots where you can chow down.
Blanco Tacos & Tequila
Phoenix’s most prominent restaurant group is Fox Restaurant Concepts and Blanco is Fox’s taco concept. Enjoy tacos, cheese crisps, salads, burritos and enchiladas at Blanco’s two locations in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Taco options range from grilled fish to carne asada. Blanco’s menu proudly states that it only uses certified Angus or Double R ranch skirt steak—making any of the red meat tacos a good idea. Pair your taco with Blanco’s impressive selection of tequilas or margaritas that range from classic to mango jalapeno.

Joyride Taco House
Phoenix’s other prominent restaurant group? Upward Projects. And its taco concept is Joyride in Central Phoenix. Each one served is made-to-order corn tortillas and includes fish, meat, and a veggie option. Down a crispy fish taco served with guacamole, Mexican slaw, cilantro and pico gringo or dig into a carne asada made with certified Angus beef, fire-roasted salsa, cabbage, cilantro, and onion. When you order three tacos here, you get one side for just $1.
Two Hippies Beach House
True to its name, Two Hippies Beach House in Central Phoenix really does feel like a beach shack in the middle of the desert. The “hippie” part of the casual haunt includes the front of a VW bug out front. Order inside at this cash-only spot and then wait for your food outside on wooden picnic tables with hot sauce containers sitting in the center. Crispy fish tacos, the fresh and spicy Volcano salsa, and shrimp tacos are the stars of this menu. All tacos are topped with cabbage, onion, chopped tomatoes, beans, rice, and cheese. People watching here is also top notch. Check out cops, professionals on their lunch breaks, and young and old folks alike noshing.
Boca Taqueria
Located in Mesa and Gilbert, Boca Taqueria is one of the Phoenix metro area’s oldest taco shops. Customers can enjoy a menu of grilled fish, grilled salmon, shrimp, beef, pork, chicken, black bean, and steak. Get $1 off all soft tacos on Taco Tuesday.
CRUjiente Tacos
The words tacos and gourmet usually aren’t in the same sentence. But CRUjiente bucks that trend in a big way. Ingredients like duck, blue crab, poke and tempura avocado usually aren’t topped on tacos—but they are here. Each taco is a mini Instagram-worthy morsel. If you’re on a budget, this might not be the best option as each taco costs $5. But rest assured that it’s worth the extra money.
After you’ve binged on tacos, consider heading to these five hiking trails to work off your food.
