#Adulting: Who to Call When Something Breaks

As a renter, you’ll be glad to know that the property manager is responsible for many apartment repairs. In fact, it’s typical for them to budget 1.5% of the property’s total value for repairs, so don’t hesitate to ask for repairs when you need it.

When to call the building maintenance department

If you’re facing infrastructure related repairs, you should call in the professionals. Not only is it the building maintenance team’s job to address these issues, but you want to make sure that the repairs are handled properly. Be sure to follow the proper procedures for notifying the right person.

Report any apartment problems, such as a broken dishwasher or refrigerator, leaky faucets and other plumbing repairs, stove or oven not working, no hot water, or Heat or A/C not working.

What about when services like internet or electricity stop working?

If a service stops working, figuring out who to call may take some diagnosing. A little investigating can save you time and hassle.

For example, did your kind but forgetful roommate who shares your two-bedroom apartment forget to pay the bill? Or maybe there’s a service outage in your area. Do your neighbors have service? It could also be your gadget that failed and not the service, so check to see if your wires and equipment are working properly. Also, it could be an electrical failure such as a blown fuse in your apartment.

For smaller repairs, try your hand at DIY

You don’t need to be an HGTV pro to make minor repairs to your apartment. There are many easy solutions to common household repairs.

For a clogged kitchen sink, sprinkle ½ cup baking soda, then add white vinegar to make a science experiment that doubles as a natural drain cleaner. For a wobbly bathroom towel bar, use a screwdriver to reattach it to the wall. And for squeaky door hinges. spray some WD-40 on the hinge and then work the door back and forth. Voila, you fixed it!
