The Best Coffee Shops in Austin

Just as most Austinites wear multiple hats (songwriter/babysitter/college student or dog walker/ceramicist/restaurant server), most Austin coffee shops work double or triple duty too. Given the capital city’s high concentration of laptop-toting students and creative types, it should come as no surprise that we have more than our fair share of java joints, and almost all of them have patio seating. We wish we could feature every last one, but we’ve chosen a few favorites to share with you!

Radio Coffee & Beer | South Austin

Radio Coffee’s large dog-friendly yard and patio beckon freelancers away from their home offices during the day with its free WiFi and attract groups of friends for evening events like trivia and live music. A rotating selection of food trucks line the yard, while patrons queue up for Stumptown coffee inside.

Halcyon Coffeehouse & Lounge | Downtown

This coffee shop/lounge combo serves Barrett’s micro-roast coffee and a full food menu in a colorful yet relaxed environment that feels like an extension of a friend’s living room. Free WiFi is a nice bonus. Halcyon also hosts weekly events. Wednesday is board game night and every other Thursday features live music. Another location is planned for Austin’s Mueller neighborhood.

Halcyon (IG: Halcyon.Austin) is open Monday-Friday from 7AM-2AM and Saturday and Sunday from 8AM-2PM.

Cherrywood Coffeehouse | East Austin

With its large outdoor patio, complete with a small stage, and frequent events like its monthly artist market, Cherrywood Coffeehouse feels like a community center of sorts for residents of East Austin’s Cherrywood neighborhood. Long communal tables offer ample workspace (free WiFi is available) and a full food menu (including weekend brunch) make this an ideal spot for studying or catching up with friends.

Bennu Coffee | Central and East Austin

With two locations in Central and East Austin open around the clock, Bennu Coffee is perfect late-night cramming (bonus: there’s a printer and free WiFi available) or post-date dish sessions with friends. Rows upon rows of tables and a secluded patio area provide plenty seating. Try one of their gourmet mochas, such as the Raven, which includes dark chocolate powder and chocolate drizzle with home-made whipped cream.

Bennu Coffee is open 24/7.

Irie Bean Coffee Bar | South Lamar

Plenty of Austin coffee shops have patio seating, but Irie Bean Coffee Bar has a patio with hammock seating, perfect for relaxing with an iced latte and friends or a good book (there’s free WiFi if you prefer). Also enjoy events like backyard movie screenings, adult coloring book parties, and frequent live music. Irie is truly a local gem with work by local artists on the walls and food from local bakeries.
