You’d be hard-pressed to find a millennial who hasn’t idolized the idea of living in NYC at some point. After all, it has been a mecca for the young, the creative, the rebellious, and the visionaries for over a century.

Of course not! The Big Apple is, and always will be, a sprawling metropolis full of opportunity. It changes endlessly, but there will always be space for young, new hopefuls. There are still plenty of lively, creative, diverse, and yes, even affordable, apartments to live in. Here are the top neighborhoods for millennials in NYC:

Astoria (Queens)

It’s not all about Manhattan and Brooklyn, folks. For proximity to Manhattan for people who are on a budget and like to get a good night’s sleep, it’s hard to beat Astoria, Queens. There’s a great community feel to Astoria that can be hard to find in the city, as it’s a healthy mixture of old folks who have lived there for generations and brand new young professionals. There are a plethora of delicious and affordable dining options in Astoria, especially if you’re into Greek food. Also, the waterfront offers some of the best Manhattan views.

LES (Manhattan)

The Lower East Side is one of the few neighborhoods in lower Manhattan that still feels authentic, and the rent hasn’t surpassed $3,000/month for a one bedroom. Between Katz Deli, Chinatown, and a Bulgarian ice bar, this neighborhood is quintessential New York. The options at your doorstep are endless, and they’re the perfect blend of trashy and classy.

East Village (Manhattan)

Thanks, in large part, to the proliferation of NYU students in the area, the East Village is one of the best spots in Manhattan for nightlife. There’s also a dizzying amount of fantastic eateries, vintage shops, and cafes, and the area is creative and vibrant. You’ve also got Union Square, which is a favorite for youngsters.

Bushwick (Brooklyn)

Brooklyn is the new Manhattan, right? Not all of it. Bushwick is still affordable, and it’s filled with down-to-earth folks, community events, experimental art, and performances that won’t cost you an arm and a leg to attend. The neighborhood is also right next door to the coveted Williamsburg, so you can pop over there and enjoy all of its great amenities while saving yourself a good chunk of change.

Murray Hill (Manhattan)

Murray Hill has become a hotspot for young professionals who want to continue with the college parties but also reside in comfort. Brunch, gyms, and sports bars are plentiful in this neighborhood, and it’s the perfect location for someone who works in midtown. While the neighborhood is moderately upscale, you won’t be spotting any of the pretentious, designer-clad yuppies. Think beer pong and Shake Shack.
